Northwestern recognized as one of the nation’s Top Hospitals

Northwestern Memorial Hospital has been selected as a 2011 Top Hospital by the Leapfrog Group, an organization that provides the only national, public comparison of hospitals across safety, quality and efficiency dimensions. Northwestern Memorial is honored among an elite group of only 65 hospitals selected out of nearly 1,200 hospitals surveyed.

“It is an honor to be recognized as a top performing hospital,” said Dean M. Harrison, president and CEO of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare. “Our longstanding focus on establishing the safest environment for our patients is part of our Patients First mission.”

To be designated as a Top Hospital, organizations must meet or exceed Leapfrog criteria in four areas of patient safety and quality. Areas evaluated include the use of computer physician order entry (CPOE) to prevent medication errors; standards for performing high-risk procedures such as heart-surgery; protocols and policies to reduce medical errors; and adequate nurse and physician staffing. Hospitals are also measured on their growth in preventing infections and other hospital-acquired conditions.

Northwestern Memorial was one of only 11 academic medical center hospitals to make the esteemed list and one of only five hospitals in Illinois ranked.

The Leapfrog Group was founded to work for improvements in healthcare safety, quality and affordability. The annual survey is the only voluntary effort of its kind. For more information or to see a complete list of the Leapfrog Group’s 2011 Top Hospitals, visit www.leapfroggroup.org/news.
