Make the Cut 2013
The following entry is by Stevie Hatakeyama, RN, BSN, OCN, an oncology nurse at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Stevie is one of the organizers of the Make the Cut event.
Research shows that nearly 1 in 3 women will develop some form of cancer in her lifetime. As nurses, we see strong beautiful women facing cancer, treatment, hair loss, and life changes on a daily basis. The Oncology nurses here at Northwestern Memorial wanted to support these women during their inpatient stay as well as beyond the hospital walls. As a result, we created Make the Cut to collect ponytails from eligible donors which are then used to benefit Pantene's Beautiful Lengths Campaign. All ponytails go towards making free wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer and are distributed by the American Cancer Society.
This year’s annual Make the Cut event will be on Sunday, August 11, from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center at 303 E. Superior St. in Chicago. The event will feature a donation ceremony, free styling for ponytail donors by real hair stylists, motivational speakers, informational booths, light food, refreshments, a raffle, and much more!
Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, and the Chicago Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society welcome everyone to visit us throughout the day free of charge.
